You can equip and use spells in your Spell Diamond, which you can see on the bottom right corner of the screen. Currently, you can equip four spells, but as you keep progressing through the game, you can unlock 16 usable slots. 20 spells can be used in the game, and you can unlock new spells by attending classes and studying.
To use an attacking spell, just tap on the R2 button on the controller to attack using a basic spell. To use the slotted spells, hold down R2 to get a view of which button you should press for the spell. Each spell is color coordinated, and you can use them according to the shield color of the enemy to effectively take them down. After using a slotted spell, it will go into cooldown, and you have to wait till the cooldown timer is over before you can use it again. Tougher spells and curses like Avada Kedavra will have longer cooldown times, so you cannot spam these spells in battle.
You can also defend yourself by pressing the triangle button at the optimal time to shield yourself. You will be notified of an oncoming attack by a symbol that will appear on your character. Press the triangle button by default to deflect the attack. If you hold down the triangle button, you will not only deflect the spell but also use it to counterattack with Stupefy and stun the opponent. Sometimes during battle, you will also notice an R1 tag on certain objects or enemies, and you can use the objects in your surroundings to attack the opponent if you see it.
