House of the Dragon follows the journey of House Targaryen 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and closely follows the storyline of King Viserys I Targaryen and his quest in fulfilling the need for a rightful heir to the Iron Throne. While the King was sure that his firstborn daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, would be the legitimate ruler of the realms, the other factions had different plans. Nevertheless, King Viserys sat down with his young daughter and told her the story of Aegon’s Dream, as well as every story, passed down from King to King.
Aegon I Targaryen, aka, Aegon the Conqueror, was the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, the first King on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen lineage. It was said that when he looked across the Blackwater from Dragonstone, he had a dream that the Great Winter would befall from the North and cause the end of the world. He prophesied that unless someone from the Targaryens takes over the Throne and unites the Seven Kingdoms, there won’t be peace from what was to come. This prophecy is in correlation to the second Long Night in Game of Thrones and the battle with the White Walkers.
The dream was called the Song of Ice and Fire, and King Viserys passed on this knowledge to young Rhaenyra and told her to keep it a secret. This dream was never revealed during Game of Thrones, and there are many speculations as to why it was lost. It could be the absurdity of it, hence making it lost in translation, or Daenerys Targaryen was not informed since her family perished before she was born. Probably the only person who would have known till the very end would have been the Mad King and Rhaegar.
