Resident Evil Village has finally released for players around the world, but the game has the same problems users encountered during the demo. While we hope these issues would be addressed in an upcoming patch, there are certain ways to address launch problems with the game. Users are reporting problems such as Resident Evil Village crashing, crash at startup, not responding and won’t launch. Most of these issues have the same cause except for mid-game crash.
Crash at startup can occur due to a range of reasons and is the most difficult to troubleshoot besides connectivity issues. Hence, we have listed all the possible causes and solution that could be causing the RE8 crashing and crash at startup.
How to Fix Resident Evil Village Crashing, Crash at Startup, Not Responding and Won’t Launch
One of the first things you should ensure when faced with crashing problems with games is if your system meets the specifications to play the game. Check out the Steam page for RE8 for more info on the system requirements. If you meet the system requirements, here are some changes you can make on your system and game to fix Resident Evil Village crashing, crash at startup, not responding and won’t launch issues.
Disable the HDR Mode
Disabling the HDR mode seems to improve the black screen with the game. It applies to users whose game does not crash after the black screen. Go to the install location of the game and in the config file set HDR mode to “False.” This fix is derived from the performance of the game during the demo, so there is a possibility, but unlikely CAPCOM would have fixed it. Here are the steps you can follow.
- Open the Steam client
- Go to Library and right-click on Resident Evil Village, select Properties
- Go to the Local Tab and click on Browse…
- Now, open the Config file and set HDRMode=false
Update Driver or Install the Old Driver
NVIDIA has launched the latest Game Ready Driver for a bunch of games including RE8, ensure that you have updated the driver to that. Here is the latest GRD driver download link. However, if the game is crashing with black screen and you have the customized driver for RE8, install the old driver as the new one could be bugged. Also, try installing the latest Studio drivers to check if that makes a difference.
Disable GeForce Experience Overlay
Another thing we noted during the demo is that disabling the GeForce Experience reduced the crashes. So, try to disable it and see if that makes a difference. While you are at it, disable just about all the Overlays – this includes Steam Overlay and Discord Overlay.
Overlays often cause problems in games, this includes crashing after cutscene or at a certain specific point in the game.
Run RE8 in the Clean Boot Environment
Sometimes third-party software running in the background can either interfere with the game’s processes or consume too many resources, which can cause a Resident Evil Village to crash at startup. As such, try to launch the game after a clean boot. Follow the steps carefully and as instructed. Don’t hurry the process or you may be locked out of your system.
- Press Windows Key + R and type msconfig, hit Enter
- Go to the Services tab
- Check Hide all Microsoft services
- Now, click Disable all
- Go to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager
- Disable one task at a time and restart the system.
Now, attempt to run the game and check if the Resident Evil Village crash, crash at startup, crashing to desktop, stuck at loading screen, and black screen problems are fixed.
Launch the Game in Windowed Mode
It’s obvious, running a game on fullscreen consumes more resources, therefore, try to run in the Windowed mode and the Resident Evil infinite loading screen or crash may not occur. Here are the steps you can follow.
- Launch the Steam client
- Go to Libraries and locate Resident Evil Village. Right-click on the game and select Properties
- Click on the General tab and click on SET LAUNCH OPTIONS
- In the field type or paste -windowed –noborder
- Press Ok and exit
- Restart the system and check if the RE8 crash at startup still occurs.
Verify Integrity of Game Files
If the game itself is corrupted that could also lead to RE8 crash at startup or mid-game crash. Here are the steps to check and repair corrupt files on Steam.
- Launch the Steam client
- From the LIBRARY, right-click on Resident Evil Village and select Properties
- Go to LOCAL FILES and click on VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES…
These are all the solutions we suggest to fix the Resident Evil Village crash at startup, crashing, not responding issues. However, we will update the post as we keep testing the game, so check back soon if your issue is not resolved. Hopefully, the devs release a patch soon that resolves the specific problems with the game.
Same as always with recent resident evils on pc., I’ve dozen’s of games on steam and they all work perfectly on my £5k beast of a machine, capcom are console not PC, wasted my money again, won’t make same mistake again though
Each time i try anything it sends me to a black screen and nothing works Ive reinstalled (x3), Verified File integerty and did the thing with other apps. Its making me mad its a $60 game that i bought and cant even play
Hey I have a problem where at the start of the game, I’m playing for 1 min and then my game is starting to change the color to green but I can still see what’s happening in the cut scene but right a couple of seconds after it crashes all the time no matter what I do and what settings I changed.
I did all you guys wrote.
Is there any way you know what it is?
Open the Event Viewer and check if there is a log there and what does it state.
I keep getting that the disc is damaged, yet I have exchanged it once already! I have tried other games so there is nothing wrong with my console (Xbox one)
Have you tried clearing the Persistent Storage?
Yep, Mine keeps crashing after scene where Chris comes in and (SPOILER) takes baby. Has pic of baby saying My little angel, and then crash to steam. Tried all these with no go.
Hi,
Have you tried lowering the settings of the game particularly the Image Quality, Ambient Occlusion, and Shadow Quality. Do that and see if that makes a difference.
Hey mate, I keep trying to launch the game from steam and every time I click on play it just immediately goes back to it, it does not start the game.
I have disabled discord overlay, steam overlay, geforce overlay and I’ve tried running it in windowed mode.
I have also tried to run it as administrator, I’ve reinstalled the game, checked the file integrity multiple times and it just does not boot
It happens to me to any metod to solve this?
