Drop in frame rate and stuttering go hand in hand and the recent title Nioh 2: The Complete Edition seems to repeat what the previous title in the series did. Although Nioh 2: The Complete Edition FPS drop and stuttering is spread throughout the game, you would start experiencing it within the first couple of minutes in the Level 1 at the huge Yokai encounter. Playing the game at the lowest settings or at a reduced resolution, does not help the situation. If you are facing the same problem, keep scrolling through the guide and we will help you boost the performance of Nioh 2 CE (The Complete Edition).
How to Fix Nioh 2: The Complete Edition FPS Drop and Stuttering
Although the permanent fix for the Nioh 2: The Complete Edition FPS drop and stuttering has to come from the developers, there are certain things you can try that can boost the FPS and reduce stutter. We will start with adjusting the GPU settings from the NVidia Control Panel.
Change the Settings from NVidia Control Panel
- Right-click on Desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel
- Expand 3D Settings and click on Manage 3D settings
- Click on Program Settings and select Nioh 2 CE (if the game is not in the drop-down list, click Add, browse and add the game)
- Under 2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program: choose High-performance NVIDIA processor
- Under 3. Specify the settings for this program, make the following changes:
- Anisotropic filtering – Use global settings (Application-controlled)
- Antialiasing – FXAA – Use global setting (Off)
- Antialiasing – Mode – Off
- Antialiasing – Settings – None
- Antialiasing – Transparency – Use global setting (Off)
- CUDA – GPUs – Use global setting (All)
- Maximum pre-rendered frames – Use the 3D application settings
- Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA) – Use global setting (Off)
- Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration – Compatibility performance mode
- Optimize for Computer Performance – Use global setting (Off)
- Power management mode – Prefer maximum performance
- Shader Cache – Use global settings (On)
- Texture filtering – Anisotropic Sample Opti… – On
- Texture filtering – Negative LOD bias – Use global setting (Allow)
- Texture filtering – Quality – High performance
- Texture filtering – Trilinear optimization – On
- Threaded optimization – On
- Triple buffering – Use global setting (Off)
- Vertical sync – Off
- Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames – Use global setting (1)
- Click on Apply to save the changes and exit.
Play the game on Fullscreen
For some reasons, games don’t run that well when played in the windowed mode and can stutter and drop FPS. As such, you should play the Nioh 2 in Fullscreen instead of playing on the Borderless mode. Go to the display option of the game and change the settings to Fullscreen.
If you are already on Fullscreen, here is a trick you can try. Go to Options > Graphics settings and change the display mode to Windowed, then switch back to Fullscreen. For a lot of users, this simple step will resolve the Nioh 2: The Complete Edition FPS drop.
Set the Game to Native Resolution
This is a solution from year back on Reddit and worked with the previous instalment of the game. As the problem with Nioh 2 PC port is near identical, you can try the same solution.
- Go to Nioh2 folder, Run NiohResolution file. Set the default resolution and then set the in-game resolution to match with your monitor.
- Go to “C:\Users\PCname\Documents\KoeiTecmo\NIOH2, look for config.xml”, right click on config.xml then choose Properties. Make that file Read-Only.
Run the Game in Clean Boot Environment
Here are the steps you can follow to reboot the system in a clean boot environment. In the process, we will terminate all the non-essential programs.
- Press Windows Key + R and type msconfig, hit Enter
- Go to the Services tab
- Check Hide all Microsoft services
- Now, click Disable all
- Go to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager
- Disable one task at a time and restart the system.
If none of the above solutions fixed the Nioh 2: The Complete Edition stuttering and FPS drop, ensure that you have updated the graphics card drivers. As mentioned earlier, the problem is mainly with the game, it’s just not well-optimized. The developers will have to resolve the issue in a patch.
For those experiencing low fps with nvidia gpus make sure the frame rate cap is not at 120 in the game but at 60.
Thank me later.
Thank you!!
