F1 games have always had a bit of a stuttering problem. The game may feel smooth in the Menus, but on the tracks, you could see micro-stutter or in a worst-case, heavy stutter. Frame Rate drop and stutter often happen hand in hand, so the root cause of your problem may be dropping frame rate at certain demanding scenes of the game. With games like F1 2021, which are demanding when it comes to the system requirements, it’s essential that you play them on a system higher than the minimum specifications.
If you do not meet the system requirements, you will most definitely encounter the F1 2021 stuttering, frame rate drop, micro stutter, and other performance problems. So, before you proceed with any of the solutions ensure that you meet the system requirements to play the game.
When looking at the system requirements, ensure that your RAM is 8 GB or higher and the GPU is GTX 950 or higher. For AMD, users the minimum requirement is AMD R9 280.
How to Fix F1 2021 Stutter and FPS Drop
F1 2021 can stutter for a range of reasons, which we will try to address in this post. However, before you proceed with the solutions, it’s crucial that you have updated your system to the latest version of Windows and the Graphics card drivers are up-to-date.
Here are the solutions for F1 2021 micro-stutter, frame rate drop, and stuttering.
Reduce Stutter by enabling V-Sync
As frame rate drop is one of the main causes of F1 2021 stuttering, you should try to improve the frame rate. Enabling the V-sync can improve the frame rate. If you have enabled the SSRT Shadows from settings, disable it to further boost the performance of the game. Another setting that’s known to improve the performance of the game is the CS Geometry Culling. If you don’t find it in the Settings of the game, it should be in the config file. If the game starts to crash after enabling CS Geometry Culling, disable it. Otherwise, enabling the CS Geometry Culling should improve the performance and FPS of the game.
Edit Game Settings
Some of the settings in the game can cause strain on the GPU or CPU leading the game to stutter. There are quite a few so ensure that they are taken care of before moving to the rest of the solutions. Under Graphics Settings, you will find Motion Blur Strength, set it to 0. If you an RTX card or something that’s well above the GPU requirement, you can set it to 5, but otherwise, make it 0.
Under the Video Mode, you will find the option to limit the frame rate. Start by limiting the Frame Rate to 60. Check the performance of the game and increase accordingly. If the performance of the game does not improve don’t uncap the FPS just yet. Try other solutions and when done uncap if you feel there is no difference. Disable the Anti-Aliasing, also found in the Video Mode. If you want Anti-Aliasing, go with TAA and FidelityFX Sharpening.
Under the Advanced Graphics Settings, set
- Lighting Quality – Medium
- Particles – Off
- Texture Streaming – Medium
In the Audio Settings, the Audio Simulation Quality can put a lot of strain on your system if set to Ultra High. Set it to Low or High at max. But, as the game is stuttering, make it Low.
Try using a wired controller
F1 2021 is the perfect title to be played using a controller; however, if you are using Bluetooth to connect to the system that may be the cause of the problem. The Bluetooth can create a communication lag between the controller and the system leading to stuttering. So, if you are connecting via the wireless connector, we suggest that you unplug it, unpair from Windows pairing, and connect via the wired connection. It works most of the time if you are facing the F1 2021 micro stutter.
Force DirectX 11 from the Steam Client
DirectX 11 is known to be more stable than DirectX 12 as it’s been around for longer. But, unlike the last version of the game, you won’t have the DirectX 11 option this time around. The new game features Ray Tracing, which is unsupported by DX11. But, you can force the game to start on DirectX 11. Before you follow the below steps, you should know that the game may or may not work. You will have to try it and revert back if something goes wrong. Here are the steps:
- Open the Steam client and go to Library
- Right-click on F1 2021 and select Properties
- In the GENERAL tab, you will find LAUNCH OPTIONS
- Enter -force-dx11
- Now, launch the game.
If there is no improvement in the F1 2021 stuttering or the performance, simply go back and remove the command.
Disable Overlays
Overlays are great as they add a bunch of enhancements to the game interface, but they are also known to cause issues with games such as crashing and stuttering. If the above solutions have failed to work, try disabling the Steam, Discord, and GeForce Experience Overlays.
Change Nvidia Settings
In the next step to fix F1 2021 Stuttering, FPS Drop, and Performance Issues, we will set the Nvidia for performance. Here are the steps.
- Right-click on Desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel
- Expand 3D Settings and click on Adjust image settings with preview
- Check Use my preference emphasizing: Quality (for users who have a powerful PC, you can allow the app to decide and select Let the 3D application decide)
- Drag the bar to Performance (there are three options Performance – Balanced – Quality)
- Click on Apply to implement the changes
- Next, go to the Manage 3D settings under 3D Settings
- Click on Program Settings and select F1 2021 (if the game is not in the drop-down list, click Add, browse and add the game)
- Under 2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program: choose High-performance NVIDIA processor
- Under 3. Specify the settings for this program, set Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance and Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames to 1.
Once you have made the changes, check if the FPS drop in F1 2021 has improved or worsened. If it’s become worse, set the power management mode to optimal. Refer to the below image gallery for visual steps.
Change AMD Radeon Settings
Launch the AMD Radeon Settings > Gaming > Global Settings. Make the following changes to the settings:
Anti-aliasing mode | Override application settings |
Anti-aliasing level | 2X |
Anisotropic Filtering Mode | On |
Anisotropic Filtering Level | 2X |
Texture Filtering Quality | Performance |
Wait for Vertical Refresh | Always off |
Tessellation Mode | Override application settings |
Maximum Tessellation Level | 32x |
These are the solutions you can try to fix the F1 2021 stuttering. However, if the issues persist, check back in a few days and we will update the post with more working solutions.
