Elden Ring is one of the biggest titles this year, at least to this point, but like all games released in recent times there is optimization issue with the game that was identified on the first-day of play. There have been patches that have resolved some issues with the game, but the Elden Ring stuttering and FPS drop have continued for a lot of players. While the permanent fix for the problem can only come from the devs, there are a bunch of things that have helped other users. Here are the solutions you can try to fix the performance issue in Elden Ring.
Quick Solutions to Fix Elden Ring Stuttering
- Open Device Manager (Windows Key + X and Choose Device Manger). Under Software Devices, disable the Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator.
- Play the game on Border-less Window, rather than the Full-screen. The game seems to crash more when it’s running in the Full-screen mode. It’s likely because it consumes more resources.
- For some weird reason, the game seems to stutter more when using a mouse. So, if you have the option try to use a Game-pad and you should experience less of the Elden Ring stutter.
- If you are using a controller software, uninstall the driver for the software and try to play with mouse and keyboard.
- Do not overclock. You may also see a difference by disabling the Intel Turbo Boost.
- If your OS is Windows 11, enable the Xbox Game Bar. But, disable it if you are on Win 10. To enable, head to Settings > Gaming and toggle the option.
- In the Windows Search, type Graphics Settings. Under Graphics Performance Preference, click on Browse > Locate the game executable and Add it. Now, click on Options and choose High Performance. Save the settings.
- On your graphics card control panel, go to Manage 3D Settings, scroll down till you find Shader Cache Size. Change the setting to Unlimited. While you are here, also limit the FPS to 59.
- Tune the below settings down:
- Depth of Field
- Motion Blur
- Volumetric Quality
- Global Illumination Quality
- Grass Quality
Elden Ring Stuttering and FPS Drop Fix
At the time of writing, it does not appear there is a bug in the game that’s causing the stutter as hundreds of thousands of players have not encountered the same issue with the game, which leads us to believe it’s your hardware or a specific combination of software or Windows settings that’s the root cause of the issue. Here are the solutions we suggest to fix Elden Ring stuttering and FPS drop.
Update or Roll Back the GPU Driver
This is the most obvious solution and you should try it first. Keeping the GPU drivers updated before the launch of a major game is something that should be a habit. When performing the driver update, don’t rely on Device Manager as it will always return that you have the best driver installed, which is fine for regular tasks but not for gaming. For Nvidia users, you need to get the latest Game Ready Drivers. You can use GeForce Experience to download the new driver.
Sometimes, the new driver can be buggy and cause issues with certain computers. If updating the driver did not work or the problem started after that, roll back the driver. Rolling back the driver may not be an option for some users. In that case, the best thing you can do is download the old driver from the manufacturer’s website and then perform a clean install. In any case, while updating the driver you should perform a clean install.
Run Elden Rings in Clean Boot Environment to Fix Stuttering
If there is a third-party app running in the background that’s consuming too many resources or hindering the game’s process that can also cause Elden Ring stuttering and fps drop. Run the game in a clean boot environment to fix the issue. If the game runs fine, launch each application one at a time and monitor the performance of the game. You can find the problematic software this way. Here are the steps to perform a clean boot.
- Press Windows Key + R and type msconfig, hit Enter
- Go to the Services tab
- Check Hide all Microsoft services
- Now, click Disable all
- Go to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager
- Disable one task at a time and restart the system.

Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling
Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling is a Windows feature that allows you to use GPU scheduling to boost the performance of games and reduce latency. You can enable this feature by – Windows Key + I > System > Display > Graphics > click on Change default graphic settings > turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling.
Disable Control Flow Guard for Eldenring.exe
Before you disable it, you should know more about it as it’s important for your security. Disabling the Control Flow Guard will instantly boost your FPS and reduce stutter, but don’t do it globally as it will put your system at risk. Control Flow Guard is an exploit protection feature, so it’s very important. Here is how to set exception for the game’s executable on Control Flow Guard.
Open ‘Virus & threat protection’ > go to ‘Apps & browser control’ > click on ‘Exploit Protection Settings’ > toggle ‘Program Settings’ > click the plus icon ‘Add program to customize’ > choose ‘Add by program name’ > paste ‘Eldenring.exe’ > scroll on the new window to find Control flow guard (CFG) and check Override system settings > click Apply > Yes.
Lower the Resolution
System screen resolution has a noticeable impact on the game. Reducing this setting can have a major impact on the game’s performance. If your GPU is overworking which is causing the Elden Ring stutter, you can eliminate it by tuning down the resolution. Here is how you can do it.
Press Windows Key + I > System > Display > choose a resolution lower than the one currently set. Also, ensure that you have not set a resolution above the recommended level.
Toggle VSync or Vertical Sync
VSync or Gsync syncs the FPS with the refresh rate of the monitor, which is ideal for gaming but the problem arises when the game has variable FPS and the VSync limits the FPS. If the GPU is producing more FPS than what the monitor can handle, the VSync technology becomes useful. But, the problem arises when the game is running at an FPS lesser than the refresh rate of the monitor. In that case, the VSync can cause stutter and lag.
While games also have the feature to enable or disable VSync, the Nvidia control panel is more reliable. Sometimes, enabling the VSync can fix stutter. At other times, you need to disable the VSync to fix the Elden Ring stutter. So, whichever setting you have enabled, toggle the opposite. Here is where you can do it.
Launch the Nvidia Control Panel by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing the option > Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings > Locate Vertical Sync and Turn it On or Off.
If your monitor supports it, you can also turn on the G-Sync or Free-Sync option.
Important Elden Ring Settings
While there are a bunch of settings you can change to improve the frame rate of the game, three of them are more important than others. The three settings that we want you to decrease are anti-aliasing, texture filtering, and texture quality. These three settings are the most resource-hungry. You can decrease the anti-aliasing to 2x, reduce the texture filtering and texture quality.
Disable Windows Game Bar, Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, and GeForce Experience Overlay
While not all games have issues with overlays and it’s been some time since any game has had any issue with overlays, a few years back overlays caused major issues. So, you might give it a try as well. If your PC is not powerful enough, the Xbox Game Bar can cause issues. Here are the steps to disable each overlay to fix the Elden Rings stuttering and FPS drop.

- Launch the Steam client
- From the LIBRARY, right-click on Resident Evil Village and select Properties
- Go to LOCAL FILES and click on VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES…
