Fix: Discord JavaScript Error

As a gamer, Discord is must be an invaluable tool for you that allows you the voice chat feature. And the best part, the tool is free. But, Discord is in no manner a bug-free software. While using the great features of Discord, you have to bear with the occasional errors such as the Discord JavaScript error. Recently, the number of users encountering this error has increased tremendously. There is not much to go with on the official website of Discord, which can be a pain. Nothing to fuss through, the fix for JavaScript error on Discord is pretty easy. We have listed some tried and tested methods that have resolved the error for a majority of users.

The JavaScript error mostly arises when the user tries to install or run the program. Here are some of the possible causes of the error.

  1. A problem occurred while installing Discord, which has damaged the application or its configurations. If this is the problem, you can fix it by reinstalling a fresh copy download from the official website.
  2. Quality Windows Audio Video Experience has stopped working. For Discord to work, it’s essential that this service keeps running as the application relies on it heavily. In fact, it is believed that the Windows service is related to the main functionality of Discord. So, the fix is to ensure the service is up and running optimally.
  3. The antivirus software might be interfering and may suspect Discord as a malware. Setting an exception for Discord folders can fix the issue in such a circumstance.
  4. Although still unknown, admin permission to Discord can also lead to this problem. So, you should start it without the admin permissions.

Let’s proceed towards fixing the Discord JavaScript error.

Fix 1: Start Discord without Admin Permission to Fix Discord JavaScript Error

Some of the users reported that they could run the application when not providing it Admin permission, this leads us to believe that due to some reason the application does not function normally when you have provided it admin permission. Hence, follow the below steps to start Discord without the admin permission.

  1. Go to the desktop shortcut of Discord and right-click on the application
  2. Select Properties
  3. Click on the Compatibility tab and uncheck Run this program as an administrator
  4. Click Apply and OK
  5. Try launching Discord, check if the JavaScript error still occurs.

If the error still appears, first undo the above steps and then proceed to the other fixes. Although there won’t be a problem even if you do not provide Discord admin permission, it’s best to undo the change.  

Fix 2: Set an Exception for Discord Folders on your Antivirus Program

While installing Discord, the antivirus may have quarantined some installation files, which is preventing Discord from opening normally. Follow the below steps set an exception for Discord Folders.

For Kaspersky Users

  1. Open the Kaspersky and go to Settings
  2. Select Protection and click on Application Control

Note: The interface may differ depending on the version and variant of the Kaspersky protection you are using. Nonetheless, the steps remain the same.

  • Click on Manage Applications
  • A window will open that will display a list of applications; locate Discord
  • Allow Discord by checking the Network option.
  • Now, check if the Discord JavaScript error still occurs.

For Avast Users

  1. Open the Avast Antivirus and Click on Menu on the top right corner.
  2. From the menu, go to Settings
  3. Select Exceptions and click on ADD EXCEPTION
  4. Type of the URL of the website in the field and click on the green button ADD EXCEPTION
  5. To allow Discord, click on Browse
  6. Go to Local Disk C > Program Files (x86)
  7. Locate the Folder named Discord
  8. Select the folder and click Ok.
  9. Now, check if the error has disappeared and you can access Discord normally.

Fix 3: Start Quality Windows Audio Video Experience Service

If the Quality Windows Audio Video Experience service is not working you need to start the service. To ensure that the service is always running you will also need to change the Startup Type of the service. Here are the steps to do that.

  1. Press Windows Key + R and Type services.msc, hit enter
  2. Locate Quality Windows Audio Video Experience Service
  3. Click on it and check the Status, ensure it’s running
  4. If it’s not running, click on Start in the left panel
  5. Right-click on Quality Windows Audio Video Experience Service and select Properties
  6. In Startup type, select Automatic
  7. Click Apply and OK.
  8. Now, check if the Discord JavaScript error still appears. If it does, follow the next fix.

Fix 4: Uninstall Discord, Delete Folders from %AppData% and %LocalAppData%, and Reinstall Discord

As the main cause of this problem is a fault during the installation of the application, performing a clean install will fix the problem. Here is how to perform a clean install of Discord.

  1. Press Windows Key + I, click on Apps > Apps & features
  2. Locate and Click on Discord
  3. Select Uninstall
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall Discord.
  5. Press Windows Key + R and type %AppData%
  6. Locate the folder named Discord and Delete it.
  7. Press Windows Key + R, and type %LocalAppData%
  8. Locate the folder named Discord and Delete it.
  9. Check that the folders and empty and all the files are completely deleted.
  10. The next step is to download Discord by following this link and installing it.
  11. Now, check if the JavaScript has resolved.
