If you are a new player or returning to the Definitive Edition of the game, the game has a lot to offer. Even though it’s bombarded with negative reviews on Steam, the remaster of the popular strategy game Age of Empires III is refreshing, especially after having played Crysis Remastered. We understand why so many players are disappointed with the game, mainly due to the FPS being locked at 60, which is a crime in 2020. The developers have acknowledged the issue and are working on a fix. Stick around with the post and we will help you fix the Age of Empires III Definitive Edition Locked at 60 FPS.
Fix Age of Empires III Definitive Edition Locked at 60 FPS
In a Steam Community thread, the developers acknowledged the issue where Age of Empires III Definitive Edition is locked at 60 FPS. Here is what the he said,
“Hello Age III DE players!
We’re aware of an issue causing some players to experience a limited frame rate. Our investigations are ongoing, and we’ve identified a few potential causes and are working on a fix.
Expect additional information tomorrow afternoon PST.”
So, we should either see a small patch tomorrow or some changes on the server end that can resolve the issue, but until then, here is what you can do to resolve the Age of Empires III Definitive Edition limited frame rate.
Some players are experiencing unacceptable frame rate, which is lower than 10. If you are one of them, ensure that your Steam name does not have emoji’s/alt codes. The fix was suggested by a user on Reddit and a lot of players have confirmed it fixed the excessively low FPS in Age of Empires III Definitive Edition.
For NVIDIA users, go to the control panel > Manage 3D Settings and under Program, check if the Age of Empires III Definitive Edition is listed. If not, click Add, browse and add the program. Scroll down and set the FPS to 144hz from the NVIDIA control panel. You should be able to get a consistent FPS above 120. Also update the graphics card driver to the latest version.
If that does not fix the issue, here is a solution suggested by a user on Steam Community. “In the user directory ” %USERPROFILE%\Games\Age of Empires 3 DE\Common” open the file called GraphicalProfile.xml with notepad and change the setting called <Setting Name=”optionrefreshrate”> to change the number to your monitor’s refresh rate. On my 144hz monitor it was defaulted to 75 for some reason.”
Some other things you can try:
- Terminate background applications.
- Put Super Sampling to 100%.
- Alter the Resolution Scale and Vsync settings.
- Try playing the game on a smaller map with less population.
- Ensure you are playing the game on dedicated graphics card not integrated.
We hope that the above solutions have resolved the Age of Empires III Definitive Edition limited frame rate (locked at 60 FPS or lower). If the issue still persists, visit our post tomorrow or the day after as we will update it as we get more input. Fortunately though, the developers are aware of the issue and working on a fix, so we should get an update soon.
