Once you have purchased the one-handed sword, you can keep it through the entirety of the game and use it anywhere you wish, even in future DLCs. The new sword is pretty good, given that it’s the only sword of its kind in the game. It’s useful in close combats as it provides speed over other weapons that require both hands.

Overall, the sword is great for combat and you should get it when you participate in the new festival.

If you were not aware, the Siege of the Paris DLC is only a week away and the Sigrblot festival is a good way to warm up on the game in wait for the new content.
